Kristian Touborg (b. 1987, Roskilde, Denmark) is a Danish artist whose practice, rooted in painting, explores how memory, mood and the body shape the act of looking.
His images draw on fleeting encounters in everyday life — reflections, screens, plants, bodies, urban fragments and passing light. Working primarily with paint on canvas, Touborg incorporates dye, textiles, reflective materials and botanical matter, allowing images to pass through processes of memory and material transformation before re-emerging as forms that feel familiar without becoming fixed.
Fragmentation and reconstruction have long been central to Touborg’s practice. In earlier works, these processes were made explicit through cutting, stitching and collage; in more recent paintings, fragmentation increasingly occurs within the image itself. Figuration persists without resolving into a singular identity: a form may simultaneously suggest a body, flower, cell, reflection or skeletal structure. Across these shifts, light and time remain recurring concerns, made tangible through screen glow, shadows, afterimages, flowering and decay.
Working within a contemporary image ecology, Touborg brings digital and mediated imagery into dialogue with direct observation, art history and lived experience. Through painting, these sources are given material presence, allowing images to move between recognition and ambiguity while accumulating physical and psychological charge.
Kristian Touborg (b. 1987, Roskilde, Denmark) holds an MA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and was awarded a working grant from the Danish Arts Foundation in 2017.
